The "Three Hills and Five Gardens" Studio at Beijing University of Agriculture is a research team composed of teachers and students from the Department of Landscape Gardening in the School of Landscape Architecture. The team primarily focuses on the history and theory of imperial landscape architecture. The studio was originally founded in 2015 as a self-organized research team of students from Beijing Forestry University. In September 2022, with the support of leaders at Beijing University of Agriculture, it was formally established as a faculty studio. It currently includes six teachers and several postgraduate and undergraduate students. In August 2023, the School of Landscape Architecture, where the studio is located, became one of the first member institutions of the Haidian Three Hills and Five Gardens Research Base.
Adhering to the concept of "exploring landscape architecture history, reviving civilization, and innovating with integrity by the younger generation", the team is dedicated to the scientific research and popularization of the imperial landscape architecture heritage of "Three Hills and Five Gardens". They work on "restoring" the historical changes of the "Three Hills and Five Gardens" on paper, delve into the complex and secret aspects of the Qing Dynasty royal garden governance, advance detailed restoration research in the region and the construction of an interdisciplinary research system, and promote cultural exchanges both domestically and internationally. The studio's representative works include the Chinese and English editions of the book "Touring the Three Hills and Five Gardens—Landscape, Art and Life of Chinese Imperial Gardens". They lead the heritage-related projects such as the restoration and utilization design of the Yangyun Pavilion in the Summer Palace (Summer Palace Research Institute). They also organize major exhibitions at home and abroad, including the "Dianyuan Elegance—History and Culture Exhibition of the Three Hills and Five Gardens" in Haidian District in 2024 and the "A Story of Gardens IV—About the Mountains, Waters and The Gardens" at Summer Palace Administration Office in 2022. They have been invited to record programs or receive coverage on mainstream media such as CCTV, Beijing Radio & Television Station, Guang Ming Daily, and Beijing Daily.
