The final of the 6th National Practical Skills Competition for College Students Majoring in Agricultural Resources and Environmental Sciences recently concluded at Jiangxi Agricultural University. A team consisting of three students from the College of Bioscience and Resources Environment of BUA, namely Jiang Yuhong, Fu Yixuan and Na Mu'er, won the first prize for their solid professional expertise and outstanding innovative capabilities.

Supervised by teachers Liu Jie and Jia Yuehui of the College of Bioscience and Resources Environment, the team submitted an entry titled the Effects of Regulating Straw Return with Different C/N Ratios on Soil Available Nitrogen and Maize Growth in Newly Cultivated Land. Focusing on the pain points of the industry, including low soil organic matter content and inadequate nitrogen supply in newly cultivated farmland, the team delved into the evaluation and utilization of soil fertility. Based on experiment and research, the team systematically analyzed indicators such as soil pH, organic matter content, nitrogen dynamics and maize growth. Through microbial community analysis, they quantified how different carbon-nitrogen (C/N) ratios regulate soil fertility, and clearly revealed the key mechanism that straw return under low C/N ratios can boost soil available nitrogen content, optimize microbial community structure and promote maize growth. The research provides a scientific basis for rapidly improving the fertility of newly cultivated farmland, earning unanimous recognition from the panel of judges.
