Recently, the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Teaching Innovation Alliance for the Plant Protection Discipline was held.The event was hosted by the Teaching Innovation Alliance for the Plant Protection Discipline and the Professional Teaching Committee of the Chinese Society for Plant Pathology, and co-organized by the College of Bioscience and Resource Environment of BUA and the College of Plant Protection of China Agricultural University. More than 110 participants, including deans of plant protection colleges, academic leaders of plant protection disciplines, and professors from more than 40 agricultural universities across the country, attended the meeting.
Duan Liusheng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of BUA, Kang Zhensheng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor of Northwest A&F University, Professor Han Chenggui, President of the Chinese Society for Plant Pathology, and Professor Wu Xuehong, President of the Teaching Innovation Alliance for the Plant Protection Discipline, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was hosted by Wu Yan, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of BUA.
Duan Liusheng extended a warm welcome to the leaders and experts attending the meeting, and introduced the BUA's achievements in high-quality development led by high-quality Party building, as well as the innovative practices and achievements in cultivating plant protection talents, such as the establishment of the Plant Health Research Institute, a collaborative education platform for industry-university-research cooperation and a special class for training plant doctors as postgraduate students. He pointed out that the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee made new strategic arrangements for comprehensively deepening reform and building institutions and mechanisms to support comprehensive innovation. As an important traditional agricultural discipline, plant protection faces new opportunities and challenges. It is imperative to reform and innovate the talent training and education & teaching system. Plant protection-related disciplines in various universities should strengthen cooperation and experience sharing, take the initiative to innovate and seek change, work together to improve the quality of plant protection talent training, and unleash "plant protection power" to modernizing agriculture, the rural areas and rural revitalization.
Kang Zhensheng fully recognized the BUA's achievements in high-quality Party building, which plays a leading role in the construction of a high-level applied university with urban agricultural and forestry characteristics and the significance of the Annual Meeting of the Teaching Innovation Alliance for the Plant Protection Discipline. All agricultural universities should further regulate teaching quality, gradually improve the teaching system, promote the construction of new agricultural sciences, pay attention to the integration of discipline construction and professional construction, strengthen cooperation between related disciplines and majors, integrate high-quality teaching resources from various universities, explore ways for universities to collaboratively share high-quality teaching resources and form a long-term mechanism, and bring the construction quality of plant protection majors, courses and curriculum to a new level.
During the forum exchange session, Chen Jianping, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor of Ningbo University and Kang Zhensheng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering were invited to give special reports respectively.
In his report titled "Reflections on the Development of High-Quality Plant Protection Disciplines", Chen Jianping pointed out that the plant protection discipline plays an important role in ensuring national food security, increasing farmers' income, and meeting the people's higher demands for food health and safety. Refined management and prevention of crop pests has become a trend. The use of monitoring and early warning, artificial intelligence, gene regulation and other means across the country to achieve automation, standardization, informatization and low risk is the development direction of plant protection major in the next 20 years.
In his report titled "Wheat Stripe Rust and Food Security", Kang Zhensheng introduced the epidemic system and prevention and control strategies of wheat stripe rust, and the pathogenic variation pathways and mechanisms of wheat stripe rust. He elaborated on the development of wheat stripe rust research, the problems faced and the direction of future research, shared his research results, and put forward opinions and suggestions on the development of wheat disease research and plant protection disciplines.
Professor Cai Wanzhi from China Agricultural University, Professor Huang Lili from Northwest A&F University, Professor Wang Qi from China Agricultural University, Professor Xu Bingliang from Gansu Agricultural University and 19 other experts and scholars presented reports on topics such as artificial intelligence, professional discipline culture of plant protection, teaching team building, science and education platform, talent training model, school management and education evaluation. The participants agreed that plant protection is a highly practical agricultural science, and that they should strengthen university-enterprise cooperation and the construction of talent training bases, strengthen the training and improvement of students' practical abilities, guide students to apply what they have learned, and make new and greater contributions to the construction of the plant protection major and talent training.
