Introduction
The School of Plant Science and Technology originated from the former Department of Agronomy and the former Department of Horticulture. These two departments were among the earliest established ones at Beijing University of Agriculture when it was founded. In June 2002, according to the overall plan for educational reform and specialty adjustment at Beijing University of Agriculture, the former Department of Agronomy (partially) and the former Department of Horticulture were merged to form the Department of Plant Science and Technology, covering two plant production disciplines: agronomy and horticulture. On December 31, 2008, the Department of Plant Science and Technology was renamed the School of Plant Science and Technology.
The School currently comprises two teaching departments: the Department of Agronomy and the Department of Horticulture. It offers three undergraduate programs: Agronomy (with orientation in crop genetics and breeding, and modern seed industry), Horticulture, and Biological Breeding Technology. The Horticulture program is a national characteristic program and a pilot program for comprehensive undergraduate program reform by the Ministry of Education, while the Agronomy program is a first-class undergraduate program in Beijing. The School currently offers master's degree programs in two first-level disciplines: Crop Science and Horticulture. Within these, it has three second-level disciplines for master's degrees: Crop Genetics and Breeding, Pomology, and Vegetable Science. Pomology is a key discipline under construction in Beijing, while Crop Genetics and Breeding and Vegetable Science are key disciplines at Beijing University of Agriculture. Additionally, there are master's degree programs in Agronomy and Seed Industry. The Plant Production Experimental Teaching Center of the School is a national experimental teaching demonstration center. Additionally, the School has 3 research institutions: Beijing Key Laboratory for Agricultural Application of New Technologies, Research Institute of Pomology, and Research Institute of Crop Genetics and Breeding, as well as 3 on-campus practical teaching bases and 23 off-campus practical teaching bases.
The School possesses advanced experimental instruments and equipment, with a total value exceeding RMB 88 million. It currently has on-campus practical teaching bases with an area of 300 mu and over ten stable off-campus practical teaching bases, which are sufficient to meet the educational needs of both undergraduate and graduate students. The School currently has over 900 undergraduate students and nearly 300 postgraduate students.
The School currently has 66 faculty members, of whom 46 hold doctoral degrees, accounting for 70% of the faculty. The remaining 20 faculty members hold master's degrees, accounting for 30% of the faculty. The School currently has 58 full-time teachers (including those in the field of experimental technology), including 14 professors and 21 associate professors. Teachers with senior professional titles make up 60% of the total. The School has 9 doctoral supervisors (joint enrollment) and 36 master advisors.
The faculty includes: 1 Changjiang Distinguished Professor, 1 Outstanding Youth Fund recipient from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 recipients from the National Talent Project, 1 National Outstanding Young Talent from Overseas, 3 recipients from Beijing Overseas Talent Aggregation Project, 2 recipients of the State Council's special government allowance, 1 "Shennong Talent" from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 2 recipient from One Hundred Leading Talents Project in Beijing, 3 Great Wall Scholars, 3 (Young) Teaching Masters in Beijing, 2 Top Talents from the Organization Department of Beijing Municipal Committee, 12 recipients from Beijing Science and Technology New Stars program, 1 recipient from the Beijing Talent Support Program, 1 National University Huang Danian Teachers Team, 1 Excellent Undergraduate Teaching Team in Facility Horticulture (Facility Horticulture is approved as Beijing University Curriculum Ideology and Politics Demonstration Course, and Facility Horticulture teaching team is approved as Beijing University Curriculum Ideology and Politics Demonstration Teaching Team), 6 Teaching Masters in Beijing University Curriculum Ideology and Politics Demonstration Course, 1 Science and Technology Innovation Team under the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, 3 Science and Technology Innovation Teams in Beijing, and 9 University-level Science and Technology Innovation Teams. Additionally, the School has invited 2 domestic and international academicians, 3 Principal Investigators (PI), 10 postdoctoral researchers, and more than 10 jointly trained doctoral students.
In 2003, the School of Plant Science and Technology received the Capital Labor Award and was honored by the Beijing Federation of Trade Unions as an Excellent Collective for Educational Innovation in Beijing. In 2008, the core course teaching team for the Horticulture program was awarded the Excellent Teaching Team in Beijing. In 2005 and 2009, the Academic Innovation Team of Fruit Quality and Ecological Safety and the Academic Innovation Team of Vegetable Safety Production Theory and Technology were each funded by the Academic Innovation Team Program of Talent Strengthening and Teaching of Beijing Higher Education Institutions. The School currently has 4 Beijing municipal-level quality courses. The School has edited and co-edited 18 textbooks, including those for the 21st century and national planning. Among these, 4 are municipal-level quality textbooks.
In the past three years, the School has led or participated in over 120 national and provincial research projects, received 21 national and provincial scientific research awards, cultivated more than 30 new varieties, published 6 books and over 300 research papers, including 55 indexed by SCI, obtained 47 national invention patents and formulated 10 national and local standards.
Since its establishment, the School has trained and delivered more than 8,000 graduates for the society, including about 2,700 vocational and associate degree students, 4,700 undergraduates, and about 700 postgraduate students. Many of these graduates work diligently on the front lines of the agricultural industry in the urban and suburban areas of Beijing, making positive contributions to the agricultural development and economic construction of the capital. Over the years, with the joint efforts of all teachers and students, the School has achieved significant progress in various aspects. The teaching quality has been continuously improved, and graduates have received consistent praise from employers.
