Introduction

The College of Food Science and Engineering was founded in 1985, which was renamed as the Department of Food Science in 1990, and the College of Food Science and Engineering in March 2010. The College has more than 850 students and 49 staff members, including 12 professors, 13 associate professors, 29 teachers with doctoral degrees, 6 ostdoctoral fellows, as well as 27 highly qualified faculty members who have been selected into the "Guizhou Provincial Thousand Talents Program", "Beijing Great Wall Scholars", "Beijing Science and Technology New Stars", "Beijing Top-notch Talents", "Beijing Young Talents", "Beijing Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers" and "Young Talent Support Program".

Based on BUA's positioning as a high-level applied university and the characteristics of urban modern higher education in agriculture and forestry, the College has developed the education concepts of "moral education and practice first", and has been optimizing the layout of disciplines and specialties with a view to cultivating composite and application-oriented talents in agriculture and forestry. The College now enrolls undergraduates in four specialties: Food Science and Engineering, Food Quality and Safety, Brewery Engineering, and Food Nutrition and Health: In particular, the Food Science and Engineering was recognized as a "Featured Speciality of Beijing" in 2008, selected as one of the first pilot specialties for the reform of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Agriculture and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program" in 2013, and approved for the first-class speciality development in Beijing in 2019; the Food Quality and Safety was approved for the first-class speciality development in Beijing in 2021; BUA was the first in Beijing to be approved to set up a brewery engineering program; the Food Nutrition and Health is a new agronomy-led speciality newly approved for admission in 2024.

The College has one master's degree program for the first-level discipline of Food Science and Engineering and one degree program for the speciality Food Processing and Safety (Master of Agriculture). The College has also set up 4 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms with the College as the independent supporting unit, such as the “Key Laboratory of Agricultural Product Processing and Quality Control, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs”, the "BRI International Institute of Grape and Wine Industry Innovation", the “Beijing Key Laboratory for Safety Testing & Controlling of Harmful Microorganisms of Agricultural Products and Pesticide Residues”, and the "Green Packaging Professional Committee of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences", and developed 4 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms jointly with other institutions, including the “Beijing Laboratory for Food Quality and Safety”, the “Beijing Engineering Laboratory for Key Technology Development of Microecologics”, the “Beijing Engineering Center for Egg Safety Production and Processing” and the “Beijing Engineering Technology Research Center of Food Safety Immune Rapid Detection”.

The College has two provincial and ministerial-level experimental and practical teaching platforms: Beijing Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Urban Agriculture Food Processing and Food Safety, and Beijing Demonstration Base for On-campus Innovative Practical Teaching of Food Specialities in Higher Education. With an area of approximately 10,000 m2, the College has 13 teaching labs, covering food microbiological testing, food physical and chemical testing and analysis, storage and processing of fruits and vegetables and livestock products processing. These labs are equipped with complete instruments and equipment, including beverage production lines, wine production lines, puffed food production lines, LC-MS, GC-MS, HPLC, supercritical extraction equipment, automatic rapid microbial identification systems, and texture analyzers, with a total value of over RMB 50 million.

In the past 5 years, the College has undertaken 15 national-level research projects, and 60 provincial and ministerial-level research projects, with a funding of over RMB 40 million. In addition, it has published over 500 research papers, applied for over 100 national invention patents, with 35 granted, achieved the transformation and application of scientific and technological achievements of over 20 projects, obtained 10 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology progress awards, and received over 40 interviews by national, provincial, and municipal-level media.

In the past five years, the College has been approved for 4 provincial and ministerial teaching projects; published 52 papers on teaching reform; received 1 second prize of Beijing Higher Education Teaching Achievements Award, and 3 first prizes and 5 second prizes of university-level education and teaching achievements awards; and prepared 9 planning textbooks at provincial and ministerial levels or above as editor-in-chief or associate editor-in-chief.

The College now has 1 national talent training base for agricultural science and education cooperation (Beijing Capital Agribusiness & Foods Group), 1 Beijing industry-university-research co-education platform for undergraduate universities(Industry-University-Research Co-Education Platform for Agricultural Product Processing, Preservation and Distribution), and 2 municipal off-campus talent cultivation bases of Beijing's higher education institutions (Beijing Capital Agribusiness & Foods Group, and Beijing Redleaf Wine Co., Ltd.). It has established university-level and off-campus talent training bases and 3 professor workstations in 36 units, including the Inspection and Quarantine Technology Center of Beijing Import and Export Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, Beijing Shunxin Agriculture Development Group Co., Ltd., Beijing Sanyuan Dairy Co., Ltd., Beijing Ershang Meat Food Group Co., Ltd., Beijing Liubiju Food Co., Ltd. and Beijing Kwinbon Biotechnology Co., Ltd..

The College attaches great importance to the cultivation of students' practical ability, and actively organizes students to participate in various specialty competitions. It has held the Food Festival for 16 consecutive years, and has received a number of awards in the competitions of disciplines such as Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics and English, as well as in various kinds of innovation and entrepreneurship contests for college students, such as the "Challenge Cup" and the “Youth Creation”.
