The College of Bioscience and Resource Environment has four undergraduate specialties in Bioengineering, Applied Chemistry, Plant Protection (Plant Medicine), as well as Agricultural Resources and Environment; two Master’s degree programs in the first-level disciplines of Bioengineering and Plant Protection; and two Master’s degree programs in the specialty of Bioengineering and that of Resource Utilization and Plant Protection. The College currently enrolls over 1,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The College also hosts the Key Laboratory of Urban Agriculture in North China, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, as well as the BUA-level Plant Tissue Culture Center. Its undergraduate experimental teaching center is equipped with advanced teaching and research instruments and equipment, with a total value of over RMB 60 million.
With a highly qualified faculty, the College now has 88 faculty members, including 65 full-time teachers, 17 professors, 31 associate professors, 64 with doctoral degrees, 53 master supervisors, and 30 with overseas study experience. In addition, it has 6 teaching teams and 5 research and innovation teams. The College also employs 2 "Beijing Young Teaching Masters", 1 "High-level Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talent of the Organization Department of Beijing Municipal Committee", 6 young and middle-aged backbone teachers of "Beijing Talent Education Deepening Program", 5 "Beijing Young Top-notch Talents", as well as 14 talents from programs such as the "Beijing Science and Technology New Stars", "Beijing Young Talents in Colleges and Universities", and "Beijing Science and Technology Funding Talents for Overseas Students". The College has received 1 first prize for Beijing Higher Education Teaching Achievements Award, 1 first prize for BUA Higher Education Teaching Achievements Award, 1 National First- Class Undergraduate Program, 1 National Excellent Textbook Award, and 3 Beijing Excellent Textbook Awards. In the past three years, faculty members have undertaken 62 horizontal research projects, with a total of more than RMB 6 million yuan in research funding. In response to the call of the party committee of the BUA, the College has actively engaged in the capital's rural revitalisation work, and provides human resources and intellectual support for the capital's regional industrial development and the construction of the agricultural science and technology innovation center through various forms. As a result, it has been awarded the first prize for Beijing Rural Revitalisation Action Plan; and boasts one of the "Top 10 Science and Technology Backyards" in Beijing. Two "Science and Technology Backyards" were selected for joint support by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, etc. The deeds of teachers and students in serving the capital's rural revitalisation have been covered by the Beijing Daily and other media for many times.
The College has achieved remarkable results in student training. On the basis of the overall talent cultivation goal of BUA, the college has formulated a talent cultivation program based on the educational philosophy of “solid foundation, distinct characteristics, and strong practice”, striving to cultivate composite applied talents with innovative spirit and entrepreneurial ability in the fields of bioengineering, applied chemistry, plant protection, and agricultural resources and environment. The College adopts a “3+1” cultivation model for undergraduate teaching, that is, three years of learning the basic theoretical knowledge and experimental skills on campus plus one year of training the practical skills at off-campus talent cultivation bases. At present, the College has established off-campus practice bases in more than 60 enterprises and institutions, including Zhongguancun Life Science Park, COFCO Corporation, China Beijing Capital Agribusiness & Foods Group, Da Bei Nong Group, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Beijing Plant Protection Station. Moreover, it has established a four-year innovation and practical ability cultivation system for undergraduates, including “Professional Cognition + Interest Research Project (freshman year), Scientific Research Innovation Training (sophomore year), Graduation Design Training (junior year), and Internship and Practice (senior year)”, and the students have received a number of awards in various national and Beijing disciplinary competitions. In the past five years, 5 students have received third prizes and 6 received awards of honor in the National Life Science Competition for College Students; 4 received second prizes and 10 received third prizes in the National Life Science Competition for College Students (Scientific Inquiry); 3 received second prizes in the National Practical Skills Competition for College Students Majoring in Agricultural Resources and Environment; 11 received second prizes and 36 received third prizes in the China International "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for College Students; 13 received first prizes, 28 received second prizes and 84 received third prizes in the "Challenge Cup" Beijing Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition for College Students; 2 received first prizes, 23 received second prizes and 18 received third prizes in the Beijing Chemical Principle Competition for College Students; 5 received first prizes, 15 received second prizes and 23 received third prizes in the Beijing Biology Experiment Design Competition for College Students; 2 received first prizes, 8 received second prizes and 24 received third prizes in the Beijing Basic Knowledge Competition of Biology Competition for College Students; 5 received first prizes, 14 received second prizes and 23 received third prizes in the Biology Contest Whimsical Contest for College Students (provincial and ministerial level) ; 12 received first prizes and 12 received second prizes in the Beijing Chemistry Experiment Competition for College Students.
