Introduction
The College of Animal Science and Technology is one of the earliest components of Beijing University of Agriculture (BUA).In 1956, BUA launched the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine program under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, which was renamed the Department of Animal Science and Technology in 1999 and the College of Animal Science and Technology in 2010.
Faculty:Currently, the college has 70 faculty members, including 63 full-time teachers, 16 professors, 20 associate professors, 52 PhD degree holders, five (part-time) doctoral supervisors, 34 master's supervisors, and more than 30 extramural part-time supervisors.Notably, it has one "Leading Talent in Science and Technology Entrepreneurship" under the National Ten-Thousand Talents Program, one expert enjoying special allowance from the State Council, one "Shennong Leading Talent" of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, one winner of the China Youth Science and Technology Award, one "Science, Technology and Management Talent with Outstanding Contributions to Beijing", one "Beijing Outstanding Communist Party Member", one "Beijing Universities Outstanding Communist Party Member" and one "Beijing Great Wall Scholar", one "National Outstanding Veterinarian". The college also has four "Beijing Prominent (Young) Teachers", two "Beijing Vanguards of Teachers' Ethics", seven "Beijing Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers", six "Beijing Science and Technology New Stars", eight "Beijing Top-notch Innovation Talents", and 28 "National Licensed Veterinarians". The faculty members have received more than 60 national/provincial (ministerial) talent or honorary titles.
Education and Teaching:The college currently offers two undergraduate programs, namely Animal Science (including Companion Animals) and Animal Medicine.Specifically, Animal Science is a national first-class undergraduate program, a municipal characteristic program in Beijing, a brand program in Beijing, a first-class program in Beijing, one of the 100 key first-class programs in Beijing, and one of the first programs included in the "Outstanding Agricultural and Forestry Talent Training Program" in China. Animal Science is a first-class undergraduate program in Beijing.The college attaches great importance to teaching research and reforms. The Animal Science program has established a "training system for excellent talents in animal science focusing on three capabilities", while the Animal Medicine program has developed a "three-basic and one-comprehensive training mode for practical teaching".The college has successively won five second prizes of the Beijing Education and Teaching Achievement Award, and five BUA-level teaching achievement awards; it has compiled three textbooks for the 14th Five-Year Plan and three characteristic textbooks for Beijing over the past three years.Several courses have been rated as "BUA Quality Undergraduate Courses", "BUA Undergraduate Demonstration Ideological and Political Courses", and "BUA Excellent Course Ideological and Political Cases".
Practice Bases:In 2014, the college was approved as a National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Zoological Science, providing a teaching, scientific research, and social service platform for talent cultivation.Covering a floor area of 3,655 square meters, the center has 22 undergraduate teaching laboratories, three on-campus experimental animal stations and one teaching animal hospital, as well as 4,427 sets of instruments and equipment, with a total fixed assets value of 71.4 million yuan.The college has more than 50 off-campus internship and practice bases, including China Center for Animal Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing Center for Animal Disease Control and Prevention, China Animal Husbandry Industry Co., Ltd., Beijing Capital Agribusiness & Foods Group, Yukou Poultry, Beijing Shunxin Agriculture Co., Ltd., Beijing Institute of Feed/Veterinary Drug Control, Da Bei Nong Group, Beijing Sanyuan Hefeng Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd., Beijing China-Agri HongKe Bio-Technology Co., Ltd., Beijing Jiuzhou Dadi Biotechnology Group Co., Ltd., Beijing Zoo, Beijing Aquarium, New Ruipeng Pet Healthcare Group, and YuePet International Animal Hospital Chain Organization. By adopting an on/off campus dual-supervisor system, the college, together with these bases, seeks to cultivate professional, skilled, and all-round technical and managerial talents in animal husbandry and veterinary medicine.
Scientific Research:The college offers academic degree and professional master's degree programs in the two first-level disciplines of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine.The college has established teaching and research institutions such as Beijing Key Laboratoriesof Dairy Cow Nutrition and Veterinary Medicine (TCM), Beijing Engineering and Technology Research Center for Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, Beijing National Engineering Research Center for Biochips, Zhongguancun Open Laboratory for Agricultural Biological Products and Seed Industry, Zhongguancun Strategic Alliance for Technology Innovation in the Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medine Industry, China International Training and Research Center for Traditional Veterinary Medicine, and the Committee for Animal Recording of the National Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Innovation Alliance. The college is now undertaking one project and three sub-projects supported by theNational Key R&D Program for the 14th Five-Year Plan period; and it has successively undertaken more than 20 national "13th Five-Year Plan" projects and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects, more than 20 provincial and ministerial projects, with research funding of over 50 million yuan. The college has published more than 40 high-quality papers, including 128 SCI papers, eight with an impact factor (IF) greater than 10, and 17 with an IF greater than 5 in JCR Q1 journals. It has published more than 20 works, five translated works, and four textbooks for postgraduates; it has been granted 22 Chinese invention patents, one foreign invention patent, 22 utility model patents, and has transformed and applied scientific research achievements of 14 projects. The college has won one second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and one grand prize, three first prizes and two second prizes at provincial and ministerial levels.
Talent Cultivation:The college has 705 full-time undergraduate students and 311 postgraduate students.The college has established partnerships on talent cultivation with the School of Veterinary Medicine of Azabu University in Japan and the School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine of the University of Torino in Italy.Over the past five years, the students of the college have won 96 scientific literacy awards, 212 professional and comprehensive awards, and 47 provincial and ministerial awards in various contests and competitions, including the National Youth Scientific Innovation and Experiment Contest, the National English Competition for College Students, the National Animal Science and Animal Medicine Skills Competition for College Students, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for College Students in Beijing, the "Challenge Cup" Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition for College Students in Beijing, the "Challenge Cup" Entrepreneurship Program Competition for College Students in Beijing, the "Pioneer Cup" Excellent Grassroots Youth League Organization Creation, the Chemistry Experiment/Biology Competition for College Students in Beijing, the Small Animal Veterinarian Skills Contest, and the Dairy & Beef Opportunity and Challenge.The college boasts a higher employment rate among fresh graduates than the average level of BUA. The proportion of the college's graduates passing the postgraduate entrance examination has been increasing year by year. The employment quality of its graduates has continuously improved.Its graduates have beenlargelyemployed by administrative departments, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, customs and centers for disease control and prevention; state-owned enterprises (SOEs), such as Beijing Capital Agribusiness & Foods Group and China Animal Husbandry Industry Co., Ltd.; private enterprises, such as pet hospitals, livestock farms and biotech companies; and various industry organizations.The graduates have been widely praised by employers for their high ideological and political quality, strong awareness of integrity, broad basic knowledge, and solid practical and experimental skills.Many of them have become the managerial and technical backbones of their units within five years of graduation.
