The College of Animal Science and Technology is one of the earliest colleges established by BUA. It dates back to 1956, the year the specialty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine was established by BUA under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine. In 1999, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine was renamed the Department of Animal Science and Technology, and then in 2010 the Department of Animal Science and Technology changed its name to the College of Animal Science and Technology.

Faculty: The college currently has 71 faculty members, including 57 full-time teachers, 15 professors, 21 associate professors, 48 doctoral degree holders, five doctoral supervisors (part-time), 34 Master’s supervisors, and more than 30 external part-time supervisors. Notably, it has one “Leading Scientific and Technological Innovation Talent” under the “National Ten Thousand Talents Plan”, one expert enjoying the State Council special allowance, one “Scientific, Technical, and Managerial Talent with Outstanding Contributions to Beijing”, one winner of the “China Youth Science and Technology Award”, one “Beijing Outstanding Communist Party Member”, one “Beijing Universities Outstanding Communist Party Member”, one “Beijing Great Wall Scholar”, and one “National Outstanding Veterinarian”; as well as four “Prominent Teachers (Young) of Beijing”, two “Pioneers of Teacher’s Ethics” in Beijing”, seven “Beijing Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers”, six awarded as “Beijing Science and Technology New Stars”, eight “Beijing Top-notch Innovation Talents”, and 24 “National Licensed Veterinarians”.

Discipline Construction: The college owns an academic Master’s degree program and a professional Master’s degree program in the two first-level disciplines of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine. Besides two Beijing Key Laboratories for Nutriology of Dairy Cattle and Veterinary Medicine (TCM), several institutions have also been established, such as the Engineering and Technology Research Center of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine of Beijing, the Beijing National Engineering Research Center for Biochips, the Zhongguancun Agricultural Biological Products and Seed Industry Open Laboratory, the Zhongguancun Innovative Strategic Alliance for Industrial Technologies of TCVM, the International Training and Research Center for Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, and the Committee for Animal Recording of the National Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Innovation Alliance.

In the past five years, the college successively undertook more than 20 key projects including National “13th Five-year Plan” Projects and “National Natural Science Foundation Projects”, as well as more than 20 provincial and ministerial-level projects, with a research funding of over 50 million yuan. It published over 400 high-quality papers of TOP1 and above, including 128 papers indexed by SCI, three papers with IF>10, and 17 papers with IF>5 in JCR Zone 1. Further more, more than 30 works, five translated works and four textbooks for postgraduates were also published by the college. The college has also been granted 22 domestic invention patents, one foreign invention patent, and 22 utility model patents, and has achieved the transformation and application of scientific and technological achievements in 14 projects. Besides one second prize of the “National Science and Technology Progress Award”, it has also won one grand prize, three first prizes, and two second prizes at provincial and ministerial levels.

Specialty construction: The college currently has two undergraduate specialties in Animal Science/Animal Science (Companion Animals) and Animal Medicine. Its specialty of Animal Medicine is designated as the pilot for the national first-class specialty construction, a Beijing municipal characteristic specialty, a Beijing municipal brand specialty, a Beijing municipal first-class specialty, as well as one of the “100 Key First-class Specialties in Beijing” and one of the first batch of specialties to implement the “Outstanding Agricultural and Forestry Talent Training Program” in China. The college's specialty of Animal Science is designated as the pilot for the first-class specialty construction in Beijing.

In 2014, the college was approved as a National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Zoological Science, providing a teaching, scientific research, and social service platform for talent cultivation. With a building area of 3,655 m2, the Center has 22 undergraduate teaching laboratories, three on-campus laboratory animal stations, one teaching animal hospital, and 4,427 sets of instruments and equipment, with a total fixed assets value of 71.4 million yuan.

The college attaches great importance to teaching research and reform. The specialty of Animal Science has constructed an “excellent talent cultivation system for the specialty of Animal Science with three major abilities as the core”, while the specialty of Animal Medicine has developed a “three-foundation, one-comprehensive practical teaching cultivation mode”. The college has successively won five second prizes of the “Beijing Education and Teaching Achievement Award” and five “BUA-level Teaching Achievement Awards”. In addition, it also compiled three “14th Five-year Plan” textbooks and three Beijing municipal characteristic textbooks. Several courses of the college have been rated as “BUA High-quality Undergraduate Courses” and “BUA Undergraduate Demonstration Ideological and Political Courses”, as well as BUA-level demonstration ideological and political courses and BUA-level excellent ideological and political course cases.

Talent Cultivation: There are 694 full-time undergraduate students and 276 master degree candidates studying in the college. Cooperative relationships have been established with the School of Veterinary Medicine of Azabu University in Japan and the College of Agriculture of the University of Torino in Italy to carry out talent cultivation exchanges.

More than 30 off-campus internship and practice bases have been set up, including China Center for Animal Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing Center for Animal Disease Control and Prevention, China Animal Husbandry Industry Co., Ltd., Beijing Capital Agribusiness Group, Yukou Poultry Industry, Beijing Shunxin Agriculture Development Group Co., Ltd., Beijing Veterinary Drug and Feed Supervision Institute, Da Bei Nong Group, Beijing Sanyuan Wellhope Agri-Tech Co.,Ltd., Beijing China-Agri HongKe Bio-Technology Co., Ltd., Beijing Jiuzhou Dadi Biotechnology Group Co., Ltd., Beijing Zoo, Beijing Aquarium, New Ruipeng Pet Healthcare Group, and YuePet International Animal Hospital Chain Organization. They jointly cultivate professional, skilled, and all-round talents under the on/off-campus dual-mentor system.

In the past five years, the students of the college have won 96 scientific literacy awards, 212 professional and comprehensive awards, and 47 provincial and ministerial-level awards in disciplinary competitions at all levels, including the National Youth Science Innovation Experiment and Work Competition, the National English Competition for College Students, the National Animal Science and Animal Medicine Professional Skills Contest for College Students, the Capital College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the “Challenge Cup” Capital College Students’ Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, the “Challenge Cup” Capital College Students’ Entrepreneurship Program Competition, the “Pioneer Cup” Excellent Grassroots Youth League Organization Creation, the Beijing College Students’ Chemistry Experiment/Biology Competitions, the Small Animal Veterinarian Skills Contest, the Dairy Opportunity & Challenge, and so on.

The fresh graduate employment rate of the college is higher than the average level of BUA. The proportion of the college’s graduates passing the postgraduate entrance examination has been increasing year by year. The employment quality of its graduates has continuously improved. The employers mainly include: administrative departments, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, customs, and centers for disease control and prevention; the state-owned enterprises like Beijing Capital Agribusiness & Foods Group and China Animal Husbandry Industry Co., Ltd.; private enterprises and industry organizations such as pet hospitals, livestock farms, and biological companies. The graduates have been widely praised by employers for their high ideological and political qualities, strong integrity awareness, broad basic knowledge, and solid practical and experimental skills.
