Areas of Expertise

Insect physiology and biochemistry; biochemistry and molecular biology of the insect midgut; interaction of insects with microbial pathogens and host plants; toxicology of insecticides.

 

Research

Our research is focused on the understanding of the biochemical and molecular basis of insect midgut physiology and interactions of the midgut with host plants and microbial pathogens. The insect midgut is the primary site interfacing with chemical, physical and biological factors from the environment. Interactions of the insect midgut with various chemical compounds from host plants may determine the toxicity or deterrency of plant compounds to insects.

In insects, the gut epithelium is lined by a unique protein-chitin structure, the peritrophic membrane (PM). Our previous research on the PM has led to the identification of some PM proteins from several insects. We are using multiple approaches, including physiological, biochemical, proteomic and molecular approaches, to further our understanding of the roles of PM proteins and function. Our projects include National Natural Science of Foundation of China and the National Basic Research Program of China(973 program)(Sub-topic),et. al.

 

Extension and Outreach

Our extension focus is on developing and applying molecular techniques in insect pest management (IPM) programs. Our projects include China Agriculture Research System.
